Everybody gets stuck at one point. To avoid a bad outcome, follow my advice.
Breedz
Making breedz with Nick's tools (sherlocksoftware.org) can get you in a tangle. I don't know what to do about real hexing, but here are some tips to avoid having to toss your awesome breed in the trash because you misplaced a file and it won't read it anywhere.
Before you start creating...
-Make sure you put your folders containing any files important to that breed somewhere safe. Otherwise you will move it and it will not read.
-Think ahead. Don't make an intricate breed if you are going to mess with major stuff like sounds and certain variations later.

How to prevent crashes
After you make your breed in pet workshop, save it somewhere safe, as long as it is NOT in your petz 4 folder. This is a backup copy. Save a copy with a different ID in the Petz 4 folder. This is what you will tinker with.
I just uploaded a new picture for the adoption center, and now it crashes! I can't fix it! Help?
This is what I've done before too. No known fix except to crab a copy of your backup and NOT try that again.
I just changed the sounds and now it's mute! How do I fix it?
Just change the sounds back. Do not delete your breed. All you have to do is switch the sounds back to what it was. ex: gd > mt back to mt > gd
Stuck variation! How do I fix this?
Delete the variation that is stuck and redo it. Ta-da! Not stuck any more.
Texture variations won't work! Help?
So far, I don't know how to fix that except to delete all but one variation.
